In 1889 phosphate was found in the area and lead to the growth of the town until the early 1910s.The first minors worked around the Rainbow River ('Blue Run') and used the Rainbow River's natural flow to transport the phosphate. Blue Cove in Dunnellon was one of the first original mining pits that made the Boom Town Days of Dunnellon begin. Dunnellon was platted as a railroad town in 1890 when trains were the main source of transportation to and from town. In 1908 the Atlantic Coast Line built the railroad depot on South Williams Street (Next to A to Z Liquors). The Atlantic Coast Line brought workers, families, supplies, phosphate, and timber from virgin long leaf pine forests in and around Dunnellon. During World War II the trains carried troops and military equipment to support the war effort. Today Dunnellon Florida is a great place to live or raise a family. Dunnellon has one of the finest schools in the nation. If watersports or nature drive you then you will certainly fall in love with Dunnellon and Rainbow Springs. We boast the beautiful Crystal Clear Rainbow River to swim, snorkel, tube, canoe, kayak, fish or dive in. The river is 5.7 miles long and and vents around 500 million gallons of pure sparkling water daily. We also have the majestic Withlacoochee River that will astonish you with breath taking views of its own. The river is 141 miles long and flows south to north. Both the Rainbow River and Withlacoochee meet and form Lake Rousseau. Lake Rousseau a man made 3,657 arce lake is a fisherman’s paradise. Dunnellon is located at 29°3'N 82°27'W (29.0500, -82.4555), 76 miles due north of Tampa. In 2004 the population recorded by the US Census was 1,951. Dunnellon Florida has a total area of  7.4 square miles. 7.1 square miles of it is land and 0.4 square miles of Dunnellon is water. Dunnellon Florida is close to all major Florida attractions.
